Immigration: Embracing the Diversity of America

Diversity is one of the great strengths of our proud immigrant nation.

The political games being played by the GOP over DACA are a national shame. The idea of deporting children, who know no other country as home and are as American as apple pie, to places where they have no family and do not speak the language, is immoral and obscene. The DACA program has allowed these young Dreamers to live openly, get jobs, and many to pay for an education. The Trump administration is holding them hostage by trying to extract concessions instead of passing a clean DREAM act independent of any other policies.

Happily, immigrants contribute largely to the overall health of the economy and have always made the fabric of our country what it is - rich in its diversity. Contrary to the lies propagated by the Trump Administration, immigrants help to finance our retirement and health care by paying into Social Security and Medicare, often without ever qualifying to receive those same benefits. They labor in jobs that allow businesses to grow and prosper. They come with a love for America and its promise, or they come because their children's lives depend on it, some often working 2-3 jobs just to support their families. Deportation of immigrants who have made their lives in the US and have integrated into their communities for decades is cruel and inhumane. Breaking up families is not the American way; it should not be. This is not the America that I believe in.

As a proud, welcoming, and decent country, we must:

  • end the scapegoating of hardworking people who choose to make a better life in the US;

  • enact a common sense and comprehensive reform with a clear path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants;

  • grant permanent legal status and a reasonable path to citizenship for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders;

  • pass a clean DREAM Act that would protect the 800,000 young people who are part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program;

  • stop the senseless deportation of undocumented immigrants without due process.
